After marriage equality in Portugal and the introduction of civil partnership in Greece and even in Southern Cyprus, Italy is the last Western European country where being gay, and being in a gay couple, is considered to be a shame.
Beyond that, Italy is a shame itself – a European shame due to the most Catholic politicians in the world and the presence of the separate Vatican State inside its borders.
Different polls during the past year have shown that Italian citizens are much more ‘LGBTI friendly’ than their politicians. Being gay is well accepted in fashion and show business, in television programs and in the street, especially in the north of the country.
