One Alabama town just took anti-transgender bathroom laws to a new level

A small town in Alabama just passed the most extreme anti-transgender bathroom bill yet: The city of Oxford will now make it illegal for people to use a public bathroom that does not align with their birth certificate, punishing those who violate the law with a $500 fine and up to six months in jail.

AL.com reported that the ordinance came in response to Target’s decision to let trans employees and shoppers, who identify with a gender different from the one assigned to them at birth, use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity. Target has a store in Oxford.

Oxford is just the latest jurisdiction to join what the New York Times called “bathroom hysteria.” Recently, North Carolina passed an anti-LGBTQ law that prohibits trans people from using the bathroom of their choice in schools and government buildings.
