Same-sex marriage bill defeated in NSW upper house

The upper house of the NSW Parliament has narrowly voted down a bill to  legalise same-sex marriage.

Despite initial hopes the upper house would pass the legislation, MPs voted  against it by 21 votes to 19 in the Legislative Council on Thursday  afternoon.

‘There was essentially one vote in it.

Independent MP Alex Greenwich, a member of the cross-party working group who  devised the bill, said he took heart from the closeness of the vote

Russia: Five gay rights protesters detained following Red Square demonstration

Police in Moscow detained five gay rights activists on Sunday for holding a demonstration against Russia’s recently introduced anti-gay legislation.

The Moscow Times reports that five activists were held by police after staging a demonstration at Russia’s Red Square, due to the fact that the activists did not have a permit for the rally.

The demonstrators lit flares and held up rainbow-coloured posters which read “Homophobia is riffraffs’ religion.”

The upper house of the Russian Parliament voted last month to approve both a bill banning adoption of Russian children by foreign same-sex couples and the nationwide anti-”propaganda” bill banning the promotion of “non-traditional” relationships to minors.

By end of the week, UK will legalize gay marriage

Gay marriage legislation passed the British House of Lords today, after having previously passed the House of Commons, which means.

According to the BBC, that means the law should be passed by the end of this week (after another technical vote in the House of Commons), leaving only the Queen’s assent.

Gay weddings are expected to start in 2014.

Russia’s upper house approves ‘gay propaganda’ bill, will become law

Russia’s upper house of parliament passed the nationwide ‘gay propaganda’ bill yesterday (26 June), leaving it to President Vladimir Putin who supports it to sign into law.

The Senate approved the measure by 137 votes to 0, with one abstention.

A bill banning adoption of Russian orphans by gay couples abroad or unmarried individuals in countries where same-sex unions are legal was also passed.
