Event: TWO Benefit: THE SANTA CLOSET

ACCLAIMED SHOW IN NYC TO BENEFIT TRUTH WINS OUT

THE SANTA CLOSET

written and performed by Jeffrey Solomon
Directed by Joe Brancato

Synopsis

When a little boy’s gender atypical gift request to the North Pole is denied, a series of heart-felt  letters from the child nudge Santa Claus out of the closet, and into the culture wars. The play’s Off Broadway run was heralded as “Hilarious” and “Brilliant” by Broadway World and Out Magazine. The New York Times raved: “A Delightful Surprise!…This isn’t a clumsy parody, but a sensitive, imaginative tale that really is about a boy’s realization that he is different. Mr. Solomon portrays an amazing range of characters, all of them beautifully.”

A theatrical documentarian in the mold of Anna Deveare Smith and the Laramie Project, Mr. Solomon purports to have interviewed, and portrays, all of the key players in the scandal that has come to be known as ‘Santa-Gate’.

The play was inspired by the national movement to speak honestly and openly to children about LGBT lives and issues, and the conservative backlash. Jeffrey Solomon’s other solo play “MotherSON” has been sponsored by PFLAG NYC and is a favorite of PFLAG chapters all over the U.S.

About Truth Wins Out:
Truth Wins Out (TWO) is a non-profit organization that works to demolish the very foundation of anti-gay prejudice. Our philosophy is simple: We attack the underpinnings of homophobia by debunking harmful lies, discrediting hateful myths, and countering anti-gay organizations. By chipping away at the underlying ignorance that fuels anti-LGBT attitudes, we can ultimately win our fight for fairness and achieve full equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people worldwide.

PFLAG National’s Gender Conference East

As never before, the needs of transgender and other gender-expansive young people are being recognized and met. And now comes Gender Conference East, a fun and informative conference dedicated solely to the needs of children and youth across the gender spectrum. And if you register before October 5th, you can take advantage of a generous Early Bird Rate!

PFLAG Columbia-Howard County is partnering with two other powerhouse organizations–Gender Spectrum and The Ackerman Institute’s Gender & Family Project–to provide two full days of learning and sharing for families and professionals.

Taking place at the North Baltimore Plaza Hotel in Baltimore, MD, Friday, November 14th is designated as a Professional Symposium day, and Saturday, November 15th is designated as a Family and Youth Conference; both days promise to be incredible informative and inspirational, with a wide range of programming and activities being offered, as well as immediately accessible resources to empower young people to effectively navigate their world.

The Family and Youth Conference will feature a broad array of workshops and supportive spaces for parents; separate programming for teens, tweens, and kids; various community-building opportunities; and numerous resources to help attendees support the gender diversity of all children and youth. We will also have a number of optional activities planned on the evening of November 14 for families and youth arriving early. Click here for the family registration page

The Professional Symposium is dedicated to helping medical, legal, mental health and education professionals better understand and serve transgender and gender-expansive children youth. Join local and national leaders for in-depth exploration of best practices for ensuring every young person is safe and supported, regardless of their gender identity or expression. Click here for the Professional Symposium Registration.

“PFLAG Columbia-Howard County is thrilled to be partnering with two amazing organizations focused on supporting families with children across gender identities and expression,,” said PFLAG National Regional Director and board member–and PFLAG Columbia-Howard Country transgender coordinator, Catherine Hyde. “We are so honored and excited to participate in providing this robust offering of learning and supportive spaces for our families and training for the professionals who serve them.”

The People’s Climate March: Meet the Next Movement of Movements

Naomi Klein | NaomiKlein.org | Reader Supported News | September 17, 2014

he most important climate gathering next week will not be happening at the UN, but in the streets: thousands upon thousands of us will be sounding the climate alarm, literally, at the historic People’s Climate March on September 21. While the decision was made not to have speeches during the march, at 12:58pm there will be two minutes of silence followed by the unleashing of a chorus of magnificent sound—part of what organizers are describing as a global call for climate justice—complete with church bells and some 32 marching bands. (Bring your noisemakers!)

The sounding of the climate alarm is an important metaphor: it reminds us, as I write in my book, that “politicians aren’t the only ones with the power to declare a crisis. Mass movements of regular people can declare one too.”

And many of the people making the noise are already showing us the path forward, the real exits from the crisis. They are, for example, the daring activists saying “No!” to new carbon frontiers around the world—heroic denizens of a global, roving conflict zone known as Blockadia, waging nonviolent resistance to fossil fuel expansion plans and putting their bodies on the line from East Texas to the Niger Delta, to Northern Greece.
